Unit Settings

There are two types of settings associated with units:

Details

There are several fields and options for a unit on this page:

Title

Enter the title of the unit that will appear in the syllabus.

Do not worry about numbering units. By default, Course Builder numbers units within a course automatically. If you prefer units not to have numbers, you can turn numbering off for the course.

Description

Enter a description that will appear in the syllabus and give students more information about the unit. The description is is optional.

Labels

This field only appears if you have created labels for your course.

Check one or more labels to apply to the unit.

Tracks

This field only appears if you have created tracks for your course.

By default, the unit will be available for every student.

Check one or more tracks to make the unit part of the course only for certain tracks.

Languages

This field only applies if you have set up translations for your course.

By default, the unit will be shown in the syllabus for every language.

Check one or more languages to make the unit part of the course only for certain languages.

Pre-Assessment

The pre-assessment is given to students when they start the unit.

Select an existing assessment from the drop-down menu to set it as the pre-assessment for the unit. (Learn more about assessments.)

Post-Assessment

The post-assessment is given to students at the end of the unit.

Select an existing assessment from the drop-down menu to set it as the post-assessment for the unit. (Learn more about assessments.)

Show on One Page

By default, a unit has a homepage that includes the first lesson or pre-assessment. Each subsequent lesson appears on a new page.

Turn this setting on to show all of the lessons in a unit on the unit’s homepage.

Allow Progress Override

Course Builder provides automatic student progress tracking. By default, automatic tracking marks a unit as complete only when the student has completed every lesson and assessment within the unit.

Turn on this setting so that students can override the automatic progress tracking and manually mark a unit as complete. When you enable this setting, a button labeled I have completed this unit appears to students at the bottom of every page in the unit. A student can click this button at any point to mark the unit complete without having to visit the remaining content.

Manually completing the unit doesn’t automatically mark the unit’s lessons or assessments as complete, so you’ll still be able to see which lessons or assessments a student actually completed. (Learn more about manually completing lessons.)

Being able to mark units as complete without going through the content can also be useful when testing and debugging a course.

Use the content editor to compose a header for the unit.

The header appears on the unit homepage between the unit title and the first element (lesson or pre-assessment) in the unit.

Use the content editor to compose a footer for the unit.

The footer appears after the final element (lesson or post-assessment) in the unit.

Course-level Unit Settings

In addition to the settings for a particular unit, there are settings that apply to units across the course.

To see the course-level units settings, go to Settings > Units & lessons.

Hide Lesson Nav

By default, navigation buttons (Next Page and Previous Page) appear at the bottom of every unit and lesson page.

Turn on this setting to hide these buttons to save room on the page. Students will still be able to navigate around the unit using the lefthand menu.

By default, the lefthand menu only shows the contents of the current unit.

Turn on this setting to display the entire course in the lefthand menu.

Hide Unit Numbers

By default, units are numbered in the order in which they appear in the course outline.

Turn on this setting to hide unit numbers and only show unit titles in the syllabus and lefthand menu.

Show Lessons in Syllabus

By default, lesson titles are not shown in the syllabus.

Turn this setting on to show lessons as well as units, links, and assessments.

Show Ratings Widget

Turn on this setting to show a ratings widget with a five-point scale at the bottom of every lesson page:
